The Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce held its monthly lunch meeting in conjunction with the chamber's annual volunteer fair Tuesday at the Lawrence County Coliseum in Moulton.
The two-fold meeting helped Chamber members get a look at non-profit agencies which provide services in the county and are in need of volunteers for their programs.
Students from Lawrence County High School also got a chance to visit the fair along with the general public. The fair helps local citizens and students finds avenues for community service they may not otherwise known about.
The speaker for the event was Luther Strange of Birmingham. Strange is a former Republican candidate for Lt. Governor and an economic and development attorney who knows the value of volunteering and investing in the community.
He has served as the attorney for the Birmingham Business Council and sits on the board of the Chamber of Commerce.
Strange told the Chamber that he was excited to see the members of Youth Leadership Lawrence involved in community service.
Strange got his start in community service as one of the youngest Eagle Scouts in Alabama. He was only 13.
"One of the requirements for Eagle Scout is to complete a community service project," he said.
Strange was also a counselor at Camp Bear Bryant when he was a teenager.
"The camp taught the principles the Bryant pushed," he said. "They were discipline and giving back to the community."
