ALABAMA VOICES: End most unfair taxes
August 17, 2007

As I reflect upon the recent school sales tax holiday, I am reminded of two of our state's most unfair taxes: the state sales tax on groceries and over-the-counter medicine.
Most of our sister states do one of three things in regard to groceries: exempt groceries from the state sales tax completely; tax groceries at lower rates than other goods; or tax groceries fully, but offer credits or rebates. Alabama shares the distinction with Mississippi as being the only states to tax groceries at the normal state sales tax rate.
