Incumbent Attorney General Troy King has done little to deserve a second term. Most of his tenure has been one contentious moment after another, which have limited his effectiveness in acting as the state’s chief law enforcement officer. Luther Strange has had a solid career as an attorney and, while his prosecutorial experience is limited, he is a much better choice than King.

On the Republican side, we believe the choice is very clear. Luther Strange offers many good reasons for why he would be a good attorney general, but nowhere is that more obvious than in how his stance on bingo separates him from incumbent Troy King.

Whether you believe Alabama should have electronic bingo or not isn’t the issue. That is a public policy question outside the responsibility of attorney general. The question is whether the state’s top lawyer will waffle under pressure, avoid his duties and curry favor with powerful interests.

King has shown poor judgment. He was a featured guest at a political fundraiser hosted by bingo developer Ronnie Gilley. Later, he issued an opinion clearing the way at Gilley’s Country Crossing. A recent series of rulings by the Alabama Supreme Court underscore the point that King is not up to the task — more accurately, has shirked the task — of regulating bingo.

Alabama Attorney General Troy King is seeking the Republican nomination to return to office, but the people of Alabama would be better served if his Republican opponent is the party’s nominee.

Normally, experience in office is a good thing, but King’s experience shows he is not suited for the job.

King’s own poor judgment caused him to have to step aside from the largest criminal investigation of public corruption in Alabama during his tenure as the state’s chief prosecutor. King had to recuse himself from participating in a corruption probe by his office and federal prosecutors of the state’s two-year college system. Why? King had asked the head of the two-year system — the prime target of the probe — to hire the family member of a friend.

Then he later raised questions about his independence by allowing a gambling center operator to throw a party in his honor, and then later allowing his office to issue an opinion favoring the center.

Luther Strange, a lawyer and lobbyist from Mountain Brook, has qualities that commend his candidacy. However, in the context of Tuesday’s GOP primary election, Strange stands out first and foremost because he is not the incumbent, Troy King.

King has misspent his time in the AG’s office, feuding openly with the governor, trading in perks that create an appearance of impropriety, grandstanding against disfavored district attorneys and generally placing a highly ideological imprint on an office dedicated to equal justice.

OUR VIEW: Luther Strange is by far the best Republican candidate for Alabama’s attorney general

Give Troy King credit for this: He has presented a strong case for why Alabamians need to choose carefully when they’re picking their top lawyer.

As attorney general, King leaves a lot to be desired. Between seeking and accepting favors and perks, he has compromised his abilities to perform some of the most important duties of his office, such as investigating public corruption.

King sought a job for a friend from one of the chief targets in the two-year college investigation — which, by the way, involved allegations of handing out jobs as political favors. What was he thinking?

Perhaps even worse were King’s actions involving electronic bingo. He was a banner guest at a party thrown by Country Crossing developer Ronnie Gilley, then issued an opinion clearing the way for a dubious bingo enterprise there. King’s actions, in our view, helped foster the spread of electronic bingo in the state, and they ended up being the focus of a federal investigation.

…

On the Republican side, Birmingham lawyer Luther Strange is clearly the best choice. Strange promises to clean up the mess King has created, to restore the integrity to the attorney general’s office and to repair its relationships with law enforcement.
