Alabama Attorney General Luther Strangesays there are a number of talks under way between various parties involved in the upcoming trial concerning the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He said it's possible a settlement could be reached before the start of the Feb. 27 trial in New Orleans.
Strange has been appointed by U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier to be coordinating counsel for Gulf Coast states that claim to have lost millions as a result of the massive oil spill. He is expected to be a key figure in the upcoming trial and said he will give the opening statement for Alabama.
"Our focus in this trial will be to maximize recovery for our citizens," Strange said, He said the trial could last for months. Strange said he would agree to a settlement if he felt Alabama would recoup all losses from the spill including tax revenue lost because the spill disrupted tourism. "I'm not opposed to a settlement. It depends on if it's fair or not."
