About Luther Strange

Born and raised in modest circumstances, Luther Strange is living proof that hard work, values and integrity are keys to success in life.

Luther was born in Birmingham and lived in Sylacauga until the age of 6 when his family moved to Homewood, Alabama. He and his sister attended public school in Jefferson County. His father worked at the Wilsonville Power Plant in Shelby County and his mother worked as a secretary at Samford University.

Active in Boy Scouts, Luther, at the age of 13, was one of Alabama’s youngest Eagle scouts. In high school he excelled in sports, becoming all-state and leading his Shades Valley High School team to the finals of the state tournament in his senior year. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather who played football at Auburn, Luther attended Tulane University on a basketball scholarship where he played Division One basketball for four years.

To help put himself through law school, Luther worked after college in the Merchant Marine as an Ordinary Seaman in the North Sea between Scotland and Norway. He returned to Tulane for his law degree.

Luther has practiced law in Alabama since 1980. He has been recognized by his peers as one of the best lawyers not only in Alabama but also in the United States. The law firm he founded has been recognized as one of the top ten economic development law firms in the Southeast. You can learn more about his law practice by going to www.strangellc.com. He divides his time between his offices in Birmingham and Dothan.

Luther has long been active at the grassroots level of the Republican Party and on behalf of Republican candidates throughout Alabama. He also was instrumental in establishing the Republican Attorneys General Association in Washington.

In the 2006 general election Luther was the Republican nominee for Lt. Governor. As a first time candidate, he ran a remarkable race against a Democrat whose father was governor and who himself had already served as both Lt. Governor and Governor. He lost by 1% in the single worst election year for Republicans in 30 years.

An active Rotarian, Luther serves on the Board of Talladega College, one of Alabama’s oldest historically black colleges. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the state’s Mental Health and Mental Retardation Board.

Luther and his wife Melissa have been married for over 27 years. They are the proud parents of 2 sons, Luke, age 23, and Keehn, age 18. The family attends St. Mary’s Episcopal church in Birmingham.
